Definition

  • An adjective describes (or modifies) a noun or noun phrase.

Spotting It

  • Generally an adjective answers about a noun one of these questions: How much? How many? Which?
    • This means that if it's an adjective, you can identify a noun that it modifies--a noun for which it answers one of these questions.
  • The most common adjectives are "articles" like a, an, and the.

Example

The skinny boy ate the entire pile of candy.
  • Skinny answers the question, "Which boy?" and entire answers the question, "How much of the pile?"
  • The articles are "The" and "the" and, technically, are adjectives too.
